Go get ‘em, Aerie
K-9 dog nabs more suspects
Anchorage Police Department K-9 member Aerie recently tracked down two more suspects, this time through Baxter Bog in Anchorage.
ANCHORAGE POLICE DEPARTMENT
Well, Aerie has done it again.
The Anchorage Police Department’s 2 ½ year old Belgian Malinois K-9 dog led officers through Baxter Bog in search of two males suspected of stealing a vehicle.
According to APD, it went down like this.
In the early morning of April 24, APD Officer Jensen was in the area of Baxter Rd and E. Northern Lights Blvd when he spotted a vehicle that had been reported stolen from an East Anchorage home the previous day.
He followed the vehicle to the end of Tamir Ave, where two occupants jumped out and fled on foot into the Baxter Bog trail system.
Officer Brown and his K-9 partner Aerie soon arrived and they all headed across the bog through knee-deep water.
The officers and Aerie located one of the suspects, who was indentified as the passenger in the stolen vehicle. They then continued through the bog in search of the second suspect.
Aerie led officers toward Tayshe Circle and through multiple residential properties to the backyard of a home, where the second suspect was located hiding under the back deck.
The driver in the case was charged with Vehicle Theft 1, while the passenger was charged with Criminal Mischief 3.
The stolen vehicle was recovered, and the owner was contacted.
Aerie has only been with the department for a little over a year, “but in that time he has show himself to be an accomplished and highly effective member of the APD K-9 unit,” APD said in a press release.
Aerie was born in Holland and sponsored through the Dollars for Dogs program.
“He loves tracking (it’s his favorite game) and his favorite treat is dog biscuits,” APD said.
