Anchorage’s Shanon Donley narrowly defeated Eagle River’s Sheryl Loan to win the Arctic Bicycle Club’s 2012 Alaska Bike for Women on Sunday, May 6 on Birchwood Loop in Chugiak.

Donley won the nine-mile race in a time of 23 minutes, 30 seconds. Loan clocked 23:39. Lori Deschamps was third, Kikkan Randall was fourth and Eagle River’s Kinsey Loan placed fifth.

The victory was Donley’s third in a row and fifth overall in the race, which began in 2006.

A total of 526 women and girls — a new race record — completed the course, ranging in age from 8 to 70. Although the event attracted an elite field of cyclists, many participants arrived at the starting line at Chugiak High School just looking for a good time. Judging by the smiles on finishers’ faces, most succeeded.

One young rider, 5-to-9 age group participant Ashley Rothermel, couldn’t contain her excitement as she pedaled her mountain bike out onto the course at the start of the race.

“I’m having so much fun already!” Rothermel exclaimed.
