ER Valley hike turns painful

Anchorage police say a 57-year-old Eagle River man was hospitalized with injuries to his back and scalp after a run-in with a brown bear on Saturday, May 12.

Lt. Dave Parker said Howard Meyer was hiking near his home in the Eagle River Valley when the attack occurred around 6 p.m.

Parker said Meyer came across the adult bear suddenly. When the animal began acting aggressively, Parker said Meyer first tried to hold his ground, before turning to run.

“The thing was on him like that,” Parker said.

Parker said Meyer lives on Mariah Drive, which is located off of Prudhoe Bay Ave in a mountainside neighborhood overlooking the valley. Parker said Meyer was able to call police via cell phone and direct medics to his location. They met him near his home.

The bear disappeared after the brief encounter.

“It was pretty much a hit-and-run thing, according to him,” Parker said.

Parker said Meyer’s injuries aren’t life-threatening. He added that Meyer’s cell phone allowed medics to reach him quickly.

“We encourage people to stay connected when they’re out and about,” he said.
