Win over rivals helps Mustangs advance

Despite dropping a 5-4 game to previous winless East on Monday, May14, Chugiak (4-3) earned the fourth seed in the Cook Inlet Conference baseball playoffs. The Mustangs play either Service or South on Friday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Mulcahy Stadium.

Eagle River (3-4) plays East (1-6) today (Thursday, May 17) in the consolation playoffs at 6:30 p.m. at Mulcahy. South beat the Wolves 10-0 on Monday, May 14.

Justin Schneider hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Chugiak to a 7-6, come-from-behind win over rival Eagle River on Saturday, May 12 at Mulcahy Stadium.

Trailing 6-2, the Mustangs scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and three in the bottom of the seventh.

“It was kind of sloppy in some regards, but it was a good, competitive game,” Chugiak head coach Bill Lierman said.

Eagle River dropped a close game to Service 5-4 on Friday, May 11 at Mulcahy Stadium.
