Stamping Out Hunger food drive a Big Success

Published:

Stamping Out Hunger was a big success this weekend. On Saturday, May 12 the letter carriers of the Chugiak Eagle River area conducted their annual food drive. The event, which began 20 years ago, is the largest single day food drive in the United States. More than 200,000 carriers in over 10,000 communities are involved. Last year the donations totaled greater than 70 million pounds of food nationwide and 60,000 pounds of food in Alaska alone.

This Saturday our local postal employees collected 3,732 pounds of food donated by the generous people of our community. More food may trickle in this week. The food will be shared between the Chugiak Eagle River Food Pantry and the Church of God Food Pantry. Even a single can donated is a kind gesture which we are very grateful for.

Despite the cool temperatures and light rain many volunteers gave of their time for others. Thanks to our local letter carriers and our community donors we at the Chugiak Eagle River Food Pantry will be able to continue to help needy residents of our area put food on the table.
