Blood Bank of Alaska
In 2010 the Lions of District 49A pledged their support to the Blood Bank of Alaska to provide $30K in the next three years to refurbish its older Blood Mobile vehicle which needs mechanical repairs and upgrading of its blood collection equipment to current standards. This past weekend the Lions of District 49A met and exceeded that commitment by raising $30,650 for the new mobile unit in two years.
The need for a viable life nurturing source of clean purified blood for the Alaskan citizenry is certainly a cause that the Lions can proudly be associated with now and in the future. It will be great to see that Lions logo on the 3 Blood Mobile vehicles traversing Alaska collecting blood.
The summer months are quickly approaching. May marks the beginning of many activities at Blood Bank of Alaska (BBA). As the school year ends and Alaskans get outside to enjoy nature, their donation numbers tend to slip. We encourage donors of all ages to schedule regular appointments this summer, when they are in town. BBA is actively out in the community; with many out of town drives and a presence at many summer events. Keep up to date on their website for a drive coming to a location near you.
Military Appreciation Month
May is military appreciation month. BBA thanks our troops for their dedicated service, to protect our state and our nation. The military continuously supports the community and the mission of BBA through many blood drives throughout the year. In 2012, they hosted 56 blood drives. We collected 1,124 units (700 military and 424 civilian), which translates into 3,372 potential lives saved. Thank you for all that you do. If you know someone who serves, please take the time to thank them for their service this month.
Annual Elliott Taylor Blood Drive Saturday, May 18th

Share Your Story on Facebook
This summer we are actively seeking donor stories on our facebook page. One of the best ways to encourage others to donate is through real life examples of the power of blood donation. Selected stories will be featured in testimonial ads, website features and on social media outlets. If you or someone you know has a story to share, please go to http://bit.ly/15fXJVv and submit your story.
Remember, the BBA must see 100 blood donors a day to maintain a stable blood supply. Keep up to date on the upcoming mobile drives at www.bloodbankofalaska.org. You can also follow us online on facebook or twitter. Call to schedule your next appointment at 222-5630.
