CHS girls still have slim shot at state berth
Wolves, Mustangs to square off in Saturday finales
Chugiak’s Megan Bear, left, and Grace Ogden pressure a Dimond player during a conference match Saturday, May 11 at Chugiak High. The Lynx won 4-1.
Chugiak’s girls can still make the state soccer tournament, but they’ll need some help.
After tying South 2-2 on Tuesday, May 14 at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium, the Mustangs (6-3-4) need three things to happen to earn the Cook Inlet Conference third seed and make state.
First, Service (7-3-2) must lose to undefeated Dimond today (May 16). Then, Chugiak must win its regular season finale against Eagle River (6-7) on Saturday, May 18. The Mustangs also need a Service tie or loss to East on Saturday.
Tuesday’s tie helped South (7-4-2) all but secure the second seed. A Wolverines victory over winless Bartlett on Saturday would give South 26 points and the No. 2 seed. Dimond (12-0) has locked up first place, leaving Chugiak and Service vying for third.
A win over South would have put Chugiak in position to finish second provided the Mustangs won their final game.
Chugiak had several scoring chances and limited South’s opportunities, but couldn’t come away with the victory, Mustangs’ head coach Paul Brehmer said.
“We played good enough to win, but the score didn’t end up that way,” he said. “That’s soccer.”
Jessi Beverlin scored Chugiak’s first goal with the assists going to Holly Brehmer and Tristyn Hall. Beverlin then returned the favor, assisting on Holly Brehmer’s tally.
The crosstown rivalry starts Saturday with the boys game at 1 p.m. followed by the girls at 3 at Eagle River High.
