Grandma’s Ginger Cookies

1 cup sugar

½ teaspoon salt

1 egg

1 tablespoon baking soda

1 tablespoon ginger

1 tablespoon vinegar

1 tablespoon shortening

1 cup molasses

3 ½ cups flour

 

Mix together. Put in ice box or where it is cold and roll it out in the morning. If dough is real cold it will not use much flour on the board. Bake in slow oven.

* When I was a kid in Indiana (some 70 years ago), my family would drive to my grandparents’ dairy farm in upper New York state about every third summer. Grandma Halsey always had a crock full of her wonderful big ginger cookies that she knew my sisters and I loved. I found her recipe handwritten on a piece of stationary tucked in her old Fannie Farmer cookbook, dated 1919. In those days sugar was just sugar, flour was probably only white, and everyone used Crisco or lard for shortening.
