Chugiak baseball team reaches Cook Inlet playoffs
Mustangs at Mulcahy; Eagle River starts consolation play at Kosinski
Chugiak (4-3) ended the high school baseball regular season with a 9-4 loss to West on Monday, May 20 at Mulcahy Stadium.
Two days later, the third-ranked Mustangs played No. 2 West (5-2) again in the first round of the Cook Inlet Conference tournament. A score was not available when the Star went to press.
On Monday, the game was tied 4-4 through four innings, but West pulled away with two runs in the fifth and added three in the seventh to seal the victory.
All four Chugiak runs were scored in the fourth. John Ives hit a two-RBI double and Zach Brueggemann had an RBI single for the Mustangs.
Kai Fugere, Alex Bozzo, Blake Kutch and Brandon Neal scored runs for Chugiak.
Chugiak takes on top-seeded Service (6-1) today (May 23) at 7 p.m. at Mulcahy. Also today, sixth-seeded Eagle River (3-4) begins the consolation playoff against No. 7 Bartlett (1-6) at Kosinksi No. 3 at 6:30 p.m. The Wolves lost their regular season finale 2-0 to Dimond on Monday.
On Friday, May 24, Chugiak meets No. 4 South (4-3) at 4:30 p.m. at Mulcahy, and Eagle River plays eighth-seeded East at 6:30 at Kosinski. The Wolves play No. 5 Dimond (4-3) the following day at 4 p.m. at Mulcahy.
The top four teams are battling for two CIC berths to the state tournament, which will be held May 30 through June 1 at Mulcahy.
