Chugiak High School graduate Gwenyth Marie Crabtree will receive her M.D. from University of Washington School of Medicine in a Doctoral Hoods and Physicians’ Oath Ceremony at Benaroya Hall in Seattle, Wash., on June 1. Crabtree is the daughter of Richard Crabtree and Karen Maskarinec.

After graduating from Whitman College with a degree in Spanish language in 2000, Crabtree served for two years in the Peace Corps in Moldova, where she learned to speak Russian fluently while teaching English in an all-grades school.

While working in social services back home in Alaska, Crabtree was recruited as a translator for a medical mission trip to Nicaragua, where she decided on a career in medicine. For the next three years she took night classes at UAA in order to complete her application to medical school. She earned honors in many of her rotations in 3rd and 4th year med school.

She will start her internship in anesthesiology at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, in late June.
