“Two seniors named for the Gruening Award”

Published:

From the Knik Arm Courier, May 1972:

Mary Ellen Wallis and Rodney Wallis, both seniors at Chugiak High, were named to be the first recipients of the Gruening Award, offered by the staff of the “Last Round-Up,” the Chugiak High year book.

This, the first of what is to be an annual award, was named the Gruening award by staff since it was their feeling the former territorial governor of Alaska and U.S. senator typifies the qualities on which the award is based, integrity and service.

Sen. Gruening was the special guest at the award assembly and presented the plaques to Mary Ellen and Rodney.

In addition to the plaques, their names are inscribed on a perpetual plaque which will hang at Chugiak High and in time bear the names of other Gruening award winners.
