Upperclassmen square off: 5 Mustangs earn individual wins, Warners takes gold for ERHS

With five individual first-place finishes, Chugiak had a strong showing in the junior/senior meet held simultaneously with the freshmen/sophomore championships April 27-28 at Bartlett.

Malia McVee won the discus with a throw of 103 feet, 11 inches. Fellow Chugiak junior Roger Jorgensen won the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 7 ½ inches. Senior Marquis Spearman took third.

Junior Tyler Rohde won the 300-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash.

Chugiak’s Chris Kveseth won the 800, finishing more than four seconds ahead of West’s Maxwell Dan in second. Eagle River senior Ed Massey finished third.

Eagle River’s Scout Warners finished first in the 300 hurdles, second in the high jump and third in the 200. Malea McGimsey, of Chugiak, was third in the 300 hurdles.

Chugiak senior Alex Collins placed second in the triple jump and long jump.

Dane Prince was third in the 100 for the Mustangs, and Eagle River’s Samantha Brown placed third in the 400.

Chugiak senior Duncan Keith finished third in both the long and triple jump.

The season’s final regular-season meet will be the Anchorage Invitational on Friday and Saturday, May 4-5 at Bartlett.

The event starts at 10 a.m. both days.
