MYFA team ends on a win

The Mat-Su Youth Football Association (MYFA) Chugiak Mustangs 7th/8th grade team ended its season on a high note with a 55-6 win over Kodiak in the “Grizzly Bowl” at Kodiak High on Oct. 20. The victory gave the squad a 9-1 season record.

The 7th/8th grade team was one of two local MYFA teams to play for the state championship on Oct. 13 at Palmer. The squad fell 20-16 to the Clark Falcons U15 team, while the Chugiak 3rd/4th team fell 14-0 to the Romig Eagles U11’s in their title match-up.

 

St. John wins title

St. John Orthodox Christian School traveled to the Kenai Peninsula Sept. 28-29, where the school’s soccer team participated in the Alaska Christian Schools Activity Association State Soccer Tournament. The team defeated Wasilla Lake Christian 1-0 in overtime to take the title. Jacob Medland scored the game-winning goal for St. John and goalie Ian Frizelle had a shutout.

The team was coached by Josiah Streff and Nick Macalino and assistant Zachary Macalino. Team members included Gabe Betson, Tia Betson, Ian Frizelle, James Frizelle, Sloan Medders, Jacob Medland, Allison Medland, Allen Turner, Michael Turner, Isaiah Crowley, Charlie Wallace, Lucy Beck and Johnathan Streff.
