Record turnout for voters

A line of voters stretched around the hallway at Eagle River Elementary on Election Day just after work. Election workers ran out of ballots at Chugiak High. Voters here, as in election booths around the country, backed Richard M. Nixon by a 3-1 margin over Sen. George McGovern. Chugiak’s Robert Kallenberg — the first local resident to win a primary election — failed in his bid for the Legislature.

Argument ends with gunshot

An altercation in Eagle River ended after “one of the men found it difficult to continue talking,” according to the Star.

Eagle River’s James D. Phillips, 35, was arrested on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon after he reportedly shot Clifford Ford, 40, in the jaw. The incident occurred at Phillips’ home.

Baldy hike begins with scary situation

Eagle River Elementary fifth-graders hiked Old Baldy Mountain, but their trip started off with a scary situation at “base camp,” as the Star called it.

“When we got to the end of the road, Mr. Powell turned his car around. Boy, I tell you he almost went over the ledge twice,” one student wrote. “Man, it scared us.”
