JBER soldier dies from apparent suicide
Incident still under investigation, Army says
A Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson solider died Saturday, Nov. 9 from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Army said in a press release Sunday, Nov. 10.
First responders pronounced Spc. Christopher Knickerbocker, 22, dead at the scene on post in the early morning Saturday.
Knickerbocker, of Parma, Mich., was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division. He joined the Army in July 2010 and came to Alaska in January 2011.
Knickerbocker deployed to Afghanistan in July 2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
“The incident is currently under investigation,” the Army said. “Foul play is not suspected.”
