From Lois Ante, published in the Knik Arm Courier, Jan. 17, 1962.
CREAM: 1 cup brown sugar, 1 cup white sugar, 1 cup Crisco
ADD: 3 eggs (one at a time)
CHOP: 1 cup dates, fine
POUR: 2 tablespoons boiling water over the dates and allow to stand
COMBINE: 3 ½ cups flour, 1 tablespoon soda, ¼ tablespoon cloves, 1 teaspoon cinnamon
ADD to sugar mixture. Add dates and broken nut meats to taste.
DROP from spoon on greased baking sheet.
BAKE at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
This makes a tender, spicy, cake-like cookie. About the Cook: Lois Ante came to Alaska from Ohio in 1955 to teach in Metlakatla. Then, while teaching in Kodiak, she met George, who became her husband. In 1960 they bough a home on Eklutna Drive in Chugiak. Lois became a substitute teacher, but concentrated mostly on raising their three children. She now lives in Arizona.
