Tree of Giving

It’s that time of year to be joyous in the Winter Wonderland of Chugiak-Eagle River. Enjoy the fun of bringing your family to Town Square for the annual Winter Wonderland Walk where you will be part of the tree lighting, meet with Santa and his reindeer, sing a Christmas song.

It is time to be part of the Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Tree of Giving kick off. Local children will have stars in their eyes as they anticipate the arrival of Santa and his reindeer. Many children will be hoping to have a chance to give Santa their Christmas wishes, or touch a reindeer.

Unfortunately for many, the reality of Christmas giving is not attainable as they need to pay that electric or heating bill instead of purchasing a gift for their children.

The Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions of Eagle River, Alaska start off their annual Tree of Giving community event in conjunction with the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce’s Winter Wonderland Walk event at Town Square, Friday, November 30 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Many vendors will be present to hand out hot chocolate, coffee, cookies and other food items.

The Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Tree of Giving project takes many hours of preparation for this community wide fundraiser for children and families in need of aid throughout Eagle River and Chugiak. Throughout the year we gather presents and gift-wrap cards, toys, etc. As Thanksgiving nears, a flurry of activity begins with groups of Lions and Leos getting together to cut, string and number the cards for our trees. We obtain the names of the children in need from the Municipality of Anchorage and local Elementary Schools. Once we have the wishes of the children we put their names, sizes and wishes on the cards to be placed on trees at local businesses. As the cards are taken and presents are received the Lions return and pick up the presents for storage in our storage unit and then place additional cards for more children on those trees.

Please look for Lions at Town Square and drop off your unwrapped gifts, or monetary donations to the Lions. Become a part of making wishes come true for families in need.

No gift is too small. Our goal is to make these families Christmas wishes come true.

Giving Trees will be located at WalMart, Fred Meyer, Credit Union One, Mat-Valley Credit Union, Eagle River Bowling, Northern Chiropratic and First National Bank. Please take a card from one of these locations and bring back the unwrapped gifts. We will be accepting gifts through Dec. 17.

We would like to thank everyone in our community for coming together to help your neighbors and share the blessings of the holiday season.
