Rocky road home

A man traveling on the inbound Glenn Highway near Eklutna had to call police after several baseball-sized rocks struck his vehicle. The man said he was driving on the highway at around 3:30 when the rocks hit the hood of his van. About $1,500 in damages were reported and police were investigating.

CHS gallops to state title

Led by a second-place finish by sophomore Jesse Cherry, the Chugiak Mustangs won the Alaska boys cross country running championship at Palmer High. Chugiak’s Bart Semmler was eighth.

“It was our first two guys who made the difference,” said CHS coach Ja Dorris.

Editor’s note: Cherry won individual state titles the following two seasons, then went on to become a collegiate marathoner at High Point University. He finished 29th at the 2012 Olympic Trials.

Times changing

Citing extensive losses from theft of fuel, the Tesoro station at the corner of the Old Glenn and Eagle River Loop changed its pumps to a 24-hour prepay system. The change followed that of the Williams station across the street, which made the change a couple weeks earlier. Changing to prepay only was seen as a necessary inconvenience at the time.

“The amount of fuel loss we were experiencing due to drive-offs outweighs the problems with prepay,” said Tesoro manager Louise Burkhead.
