Brainy Wolves duo earns state tennis victory

Eagle River sweeps East
Bryce Carpenter won three individual events (200 IM, 100 fly, 100 free) to lead Eagle River swimming/diving in a sweep over host East on Friday, Oct. 5.
Brandon Fast won two events (500 free, 100 breast) for Eagle River’s boys, which won 92-85.
Julia Geskey (200 IM, 100 breast), Kate Mondl (200 free, 100 fly) and Sam Coy (50 free, 100 free) won two individual events apiece to lead the girls to a 97-88 victory.
Dimond sweeps Chugiak
Dimond’s girls won 204-113 and the boys won 209-104 in a sweep over Chugiak on Friday, Oct. 5.
Sammy Burke (100 free, 100 back) and Kaitlin Friedli (diving) earned the only wins for Chugiak’s girls.
Ethan Espe (100 fly) turned in the lone first-place finish for Chugiak’s boys.
Bennice/Klaameyer win at state
Eagle River’s Wesley Bennice and Jacob Klaameyer upset third-seeded Ryan Burke/Jacob Hebard of Monroe Catholic 6-2, 6-4 in the boys doubles quarterfinal match of the state high school tennis tournament Friday, Oct. 5 at Alaska Club North.
Bennice and Klaameyer were forced to forfeit their semifinal match the following day as both had signed up to take the SAT’s on Saturday morning.
Eagle River’s girls doubles team of Mary Stone/Karolena Williams lost 6-0, 6-0 to South’s Palden Flynn/Zoey Flynn in the quarterfinals.
Reed Lekander of West defeated Chugiak’s Nate House 6-0, 6-0 in the boys singles quarterfinals.
West won the team championship.
West 5, Chugiak 2
Defending Cook Inlet Conference riflery champion West defeated Chugiak 5-2 in the season opening match Friday, Oct. 5. Sullivan Gilley fired a 279 to lead all Chugiak shooters.
Service vs. Eagle River scores were not reported.
Chugiak 3, Eagle River 1
Chugiak beat visiting Eagle River 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 10-25, 26-24) in CIC volleyball action Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Rachel Gregg had eight blocks and 11 kills for the Mustangs while teammate Kirsten Veech got 25 digs.
Gabbi LeCates’ 13 kills and four blocks and Lucy Thomas’ 21 digs led Eagle River. Setter Elexa Walker dished out 38 assists for the Wolves.
Chugiak 3, East 0
Kirsten Veech and Rachel Gregg had nine kills apiece to lead Chugiak past East 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-13) on Friday, Oct. 5.
Gregg added five blocks and Veech had 12 digs. Kathleen Gill recorded 13 digs for the Mustangs.
South 3, Eagle River 0
South swept Eagle River 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 on Thursday, Oct. 4.
Wolves win Juneau tourney
After forfeiting all its matches a day prior due to fog that grounded their flight in Ketchikan, Eagle River’s volleyball team won six straight matches to claim the Juneau Jive tournament championship on Saturday, Oct. 6.
The Wolves beat West Valley 25-17, 25-16 in the title match. Morgen Worhle and Elexa Walker were named to the all-tournament team from Eagle River.
Bartlett beats Chugiak
Emily Romero finished third all-around to lead Chugiak gymnasts in a dual meet against Bartlett on Oct. 4.
Bartlett earned 140.05 points to Chugiak’s 81.3.
Maddie Smith won the uneven parallel bars, balance beam and floor exercise for the Mustangs. A wrist injury prevented Smith from competing in the vault.
