“Chugiak post office robbed”
From the Knik Arm Courier, Aug. 3, 1960:
Sometime last week the Chugiak Post Office was robbed, but fortunately the victim was not the United States mail but Postmaster Paul Swanson.
Sometime when the post office was closed, a sneak thief stole one of the guns that Paul had displayed in the lobby of the post office.
Paul said the gun — a 10-gauge shotgun — was worth very little as a firearm, but had considerable sentimental value as an heirloom, having belonged to his father.
Apparently, the thief was familiar with the post office as he would have had to reach over the top of the folding partition, which is drawn across the lobby during the hours the post office is closed, and removed the gun from the rafter where it had been hanging.
