Bidding for the Cause

Published:

Fall seems to be the time of year when auctions abound, raising funds for a variety of non-profits throughout our community.

From the standpoint of service organizations, they are becoming a staple for small fundraising endeavors within our local community. Between the Lions Clubs, the Elks Lodge, VFW and American Legion there have been several small fundraising events over the past years to assist families with life threatening medical issues. Fortunately, it is the generosity of small businesses, community members, friends and family that enable the clubs to hold these events. Most of the auction items are donated by people who have a direct connection to the recipient of the funds or they are a friend of a friend and so on. The connectivity of a small community is amazing and lots of great things can happen when we all work together.

There are also bigger auction events supporting organizations such as the Eagle River Chamber, public radio, Bean’s Café, the Anchorage Museum, just to name a few. Sometimes it seems overwhelming, but if you believe in a cause, it’s a great way to support the organization and enjoy a fun afternoon or evening out; and hopefully come home with some great buys. When you figure how much it costs just to go out to dinner, the ticket price for some of these events are reasonable, and you’re contributing to a cause.

One of the Sleeping Lady Mtn. Lions Club’s causes is Hope Community Resources, Inc. They have a history with Hope from back in the early 80’s as a major player in the Eagle River Walk & Roll for Hope.

Upon the discontinuation of the Eagle River Walk & Roll for Hope, the Sleeping Lady’s adopted Hope’s annual auction as their new pet project for the agency. Over the years the club has provided volunteers for set up, prepared and served food, sold raffle tickets and sponsored a table or two. The club’s support of the event has enabled Hope’s development staff to grow it into a premier event for the organization.

Club members look forward to the Hope Auction, as it is a chance for them to reconnect with Hope’s mission and the people who choose their supports. This year is no different, the club will be out in full force on Saturday, Oct. 27 for the 17th Annual Hope Auction, which is held at the Anchorage Hilton Hotel.

There are many other auctions for worthy causes, and the Lions encourage you to support those that have meaning to you. Whether it be the small “hometown” event or a big gala, they all serve a purpose and support those in our community who need a little help. The Hope Auction just happens to be one that means a lot to the Sleeping Lady Mtn. Lions Club. For more information about the 17th Annual Hope Auction, please visit the Sleeping Lady Mtn.
