“Local woman named poet laureate”

Published:

From the Knik Arm Courier:

Mrs. Margaret Mielke, of Lower Peters Creek, has called attention to Oct. 15, which the 1963 legislature had passed a resolution to observe as World Poetry Day.

Mrs. Mielke, who herself was designated as Poet Laureate for the state of Alaska by the 1963 legislature — a title which she will carry for two years — said observance of World Poetry Day may be carried out by schools with the reading, discussion and dramatization of poems; use of poetry in the pulpits by ministers; in libraries; on radio and TV; and publication of poetry in newspapers.

The Poetry Society of Alaska, of which Mrs. Mielke is a member, has asked her to contact the local newspaper and ask that some mention of World Poetry Day be made.

Mrs. Mielke has called attention to several fine poets residing in the greater Chugiak area. She mentions Louise Juhnke, of Birchwood, Bernard Tewell and Marjorie Call, of Old Chugiak, and Bessie Stevens and her daughter, Cathy, of Peters Creek. She also calls attention to Bob Klem, of Palmer, and Edythe Corwin, of the Butte, both excellent Alaskan poets.
