Beyond brownies and bake sales

When you think of volunteering what pops into your mind? Is it cleaning up trash on the side of the highway during the annual city wide clean up day? Or do you think of working the meal line at a homeless shelter? The images that come to mind are as varied as the opportunities to serve. Our community has a wide array of groups that embark upon projects from feeding the hungry to providing seeing-eye dogs to the blind.

During the year, the Chugiak, Eagle River, and Sleeping Lady Lions Clubs partner with other volunteer groups to help serve people within our community who may be struggling. As the holidays approach we will embark upon numerous opportunities for the public to get involved. We will be hosting a community Thanksgiving dinner, collecting and distributing gifts for children who may not otherwise experience them at Christmas, and distributing food baskets to families who find it difficult to put food on the table.

Volunteering is much bigger than one project; it’s about an idea that together, as a group, we can make a difference in our community. Volunteering is beyond brownies and bake sales; it is the spirit of giving and compassion. Any and all are not only welcome, but encouraged, to stop by a Lions meeting; introduce yourself, meet your neighbors, help us on a project. We’re not looking for a long term commitment; just a helping hand. The Sleeping Lady Lions meet at 7pm, the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month. The Eagle River Lions meet at 7pm, the 1st & 3rd Thursday of each month; both clubs meet at the ER Lions Clubhouse located at Lions Park. The Chugiak Lions meet at 7pm, at the American Legion in Peters Creek the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month. We look forward to seeing new faces and hope we can share our passion for service with many of you.
