Cobb kickin’ it at college level
Kelly Cobb seems to be adjusting nicely to college life.
The Duke University freshman has exploded onto the scene for the Blue Devils, racking up a pair of game-winning goals, including a left-footed rocket that lifted Duke to a 2-1 lead in their eventual 3-1 win over No. 1 Notre Dame on Aug. 28.
“It feels amazing. I cannot even explain it.” Cobb said in a Duke press release sent after the match in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The goal was the second in two games for Cobb, who notched her first career college goal in Duke’s 2-0 win over William and Mary on Aug. 26. That game also marked the first career start for Cobb, who came off the bench in Duke’s first two games of the season.
After her recent surge, it’s a good bet Cobb, 19, will continue to see big minutes for the Blue Devils. Through Duke’s four games this season, the Peters Creek native and 2011 Chugiak High grad was tied for the team lead in shots (12) and was the only player with two goals.
“Kelly is a big-time player,” said Duke coach Robbie Church. “We knew that when we recruited her — we have been excited for her to come in for the last couple of years. She has the capability of scoring goals just like that.”
Duke’s next game is Friday, Sept. 2 against Auburn University at Duke.
