David Alan Thomas, Sr., 73, died Saturday, September 10 surrounded by his family in Anchorage.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 53 years, Nancy; sons, Charles and David; daughter, Cynthia; and six grandchildren.

He was born in Chester, Penn. And attended Swarthmore High School. He received a B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Westchester State University and went on to receive a Master’s in Counseling and Psychology from Villanova University.

His love of the outdoors brought him to Alaska in 1966. He was an avid hunter and traveled throughout the state doing what he loved. He started his teaching career in Pennsylvania and later retired as a guidance counselor from Bartlett High in 1986.

“Dave was a loving husband, father, grandfather and faithful friend whose humor will be missed by all who knew him,” his family said. “A special thank you for Dr. Mary Stewart, all the doctors and staff at the Alaska Regional Hospital oncology department, and to the nurses at the hospital infusion center and oncology department for their outstanding care of our beloved husband and father. We greatly appreciate the compassion shown to Dave and our family by Father Norman Elliott.”

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. at Holy Spirit Church in Eagle River with a celebration of life immediately afterward at the Eagle River Elks Club.
