Chugiak’s two-game winning streak came to an end Monday, Sept. 12 with a 32-6 loss to West.
Chugiak 28, South 0
“This was the best game we’ve played this year by far,” said Mustangs head coach Jon Schroeder after his team improved to .500 with a dominant 28-0 win over South on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Chugiak’s Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium.
Chugiak jumped all over the Wolverines from the start, getting a 50-yard touchdown on the opening play of the game when quarterback Jessi McMullen, receiver Sam Perez and running back Kenzie Matthis executed a perfect hook-and-ladder that ended with the speedy Matthis sprinting untouched to the end zone.
“Jumping on them early on the first offensive play I think was huge for our confidence and destroyed theirs immediately,” Schroeder said.
Matthis also scored on a long rushing touchdown for Chugiak, which got touchdowns from Andre Samaniego and Tracie Haken.
Chugiak has mostly new players in new positions from last season, and Schroeder has said all season that the team will be a work in progress. After the South win, he said he’s starting to see a different team than the Mustangs that opened 1-3.
“We’re improving all the time because we’re learning the game,”
