Chugiak tennis uses forfeits to edge Eagle River

Chugiak tennis used three forfeits to edge rival Eagle River 5-4 on Aug. 28. Jacob Shercliffe (boys No. 2 singles) and Tasha Boyer (girls No. 1 singles) earned wins on the court for the Mustangs.
Ryan Casey (boys No. 1 singles), Claire Bottini (girls No. 2 singles), Jace Jerome/Daniel McLain (boys No. 1 doubles) and Mary Stone/Dana Bernhardt (girls No. 1 doubles) notched victories for Eagle River.
On Friday, Aug. 30, Chugiak cruised to an 8-1 win over Bartlett. Max Haines and Boyer won the No. 1 singles matches, Shercliffe didn’t drop a game in the No. 2 singles match and Rebekah Jensen/Autumn Harth won the girls No. 1 doubles for Chugiak, which got four wins via forfeit.
Teams were rained out on Tuesday, Sept. 3
The Wolves were in action Wednesday, Sept. 4 against West, but scores were not available when the Star went to press.
Both squads play Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. with Chugiak traveling to South and Eagle River playing at East.
Dimond volleyball wins Chugiak Invite
Dimond earned a 2-1 (21-25, 25-11, 15-2) win over Palmer in the title match of the Chugiak Invitational on Saturday, Aug. 31.
Chugiak plays at West on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 2:30 p.m. before traveling to South on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7:15 p.m.
The Wolves played South on Wednesday, Sept. 4, but a score was not available when the Star went to press. Eagle River is off until Tuesday, Sept. 10 when it hosts Service at 7:15 p.m.
Chugiak splits with Service
Sammy Burke (500 free, 100 breast) and Emmie Jennings (50 free, 100 back) won two individual events apiece to help Chugiak’s girls swimming and diving team down Service 174-107 on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Bartlett’s pool. Jennings’ backstroke time was a personal season best.
Coach Anne Williams wrote in an email that she was happy with her team’s versatility and endurance.
“The theme for them this meet was endurance and unity,” Williams wrote.
Austin Rochon (1-meter diving) won the lone event for Chugiak’s boys who fell 211-93. The Mustangs went 1-2-4 in the boys diving event.
Chugiak meets South on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Bartlett.
Eagle River sweeps swim dual
Eagle River won 18 events as the Wolves’ swimming and diving team rolled over host Bartlett on Saturday, Aug. 31. Blaise Fox-Icarro (500 free, 100 breast) won two individual events each to help the boys to a 198-37 win. Julia Geskey (500 free), Jordyn Bruce (200 IM), Ester Min (100 back) and Kate Maker (100 fly) each won an individual event and team up to win the 200 medley and 400 free relays in the girls’ 163-65 victory.
The Wolves take on West on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Bartlett.
Chugiak, ER flaggers fall
Vanessa Tufaga scored three touchdowns to help Dimond cruise past Chugiak 33-0 on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Dimond Alumni Field. The Mustangs (1-2) host Service on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m.
Tara Fisher caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Lauren Frost for Eagle River’s lone score in a 17-7 loss to West on Friday, Aug. 30 at AFS. Frost also had three interceptions.
Eagle River’s 7-0 lead disappeared after West scored on a safety late in the third quarter and added two touchdowns in the fourth.
The Wolves (0-3) host South on Saturday, Sept. 7 at noon at Eagle River High.
Smith shines in gym opener
Eagle River’s Mackenzie Smith won every event and won the all-around by nearly five points in the season-opening gymnastics meet against East and Chugiak on Friday, Aug. 30 at Chugiak High.
Chugiak’s Maddie Smith placed second in the bars, beam and floor to finish second overall.
Both squads compete in quad meets Saturday, Sept. 7 at 10 a.m. with Eagle River taking on host Dimond, East and Bartlett while Chugiak hosts South, Service and West.
