Chugiak’s Ty Jordan and Eagle River’s Nikki Boggs ran away with impressive victories in the first dual of the cross country running season Friday, Aug. 30 at Chugiak’s Beach Lake Trails.

Jordan, a sophomore, won the boys 5-kilometer race in 17 minutes, 23 seconds — 34 seconds ahead of teammate David McPhetres in second.

Boggs’ time of 21:42 put her 45.5 seconds in front of Chugiak’s Sara Hartke.

The Mustangs swept the top five boys spots. After McPhetres came John Weaver (18:13), Roan Hall (18:27) and Tim Sorensen (18:32). Jacob Walsh (18:42) led Eagle River with a sixth-place finish.

In the girls race, Chugiak’s Hannah Booher (22:35) finished third, and Eagle River’s Kate Paskievitch (22:46) and Summer Frazier (22:47) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Jordan, McPhetres, Hall and Sorensen went to state last year after earning a third-place team finish at the Cook Inlet Conference meet. 2013 graduate Chris Kveseth rounded out the Mustangs team.

A senior, McPhetres led all local boys with a ninth-place finish at state last season.

Hartke also earned a trip to state last year as a freshman as did her older sister, Sam, who graduated in May.

2013 ERHS grad Hannah Stevens led the Wolves last year with a ninth-place performance at state. Sierra Richardson was the only other Eagle River runner to make state last season.

Boggs and Richardson were also part of Eagle River’s first team in school history to earn a state berth two years ago.

The Big 8 Preview is set for Saturday, Sept. 7 at Kincaid Park. The open races start at 10 a.m. with boys varsity slated for 11:20 a.m. and the girls varsity to follow 30 minutes later.
