A busy day for local prep athletes

Saturday, Sept. 7 was a busy day for local athletes. Here’s a look at results for Chugiak and Eagle River:

 

ER, West split

Blaise Fox-Icarro (200 free, 500 free) and Bryce Fox-Icarro (100 back, 200 IM) won two individual events apiece to help Eagle River’s boys swimming and diving team down West 186-106 on Saturday at Bartlett.

Julia Geskey (200 free, 100 back) and Jordyn Bruce (50 free, 100 breast) netted two individual wins each for Eagle River’s girls, who fell just short 156-148.

The Wolves battle East on Friday, Sept. 13 at Bartlett’s pool.

 

South sweeps Chugiak

Emmie Jennings (200 IM, 100 free), Sammy Burke (50 free, 100 back) and Abby Blackstone (200 free, 100 breast) won two events apiece for Chugiak girls swimming and diving, which fell to South 190-123 on Saturday at Bartlett.

South’s boys won every event to win 208-98 and earn the sweep.

Chugiak travels to Dimond on Friday, Sept. 13.

 

Jordan wins Big 8

Chugiak sophomore Ty Jordan won the Big 8 Preview cross country race Saturday at Kincaid Park. Jordan’s finished the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 27 seconds — more than 13 seconds faster than South’s Seiji Takagi.

David McPhetres (eighth), Roan Hall (16th), John Weaver (18th) and Tim Sorensen (25th) all cracked the top 25 to help Chugiak’s boys finish third as a team.

Jacob Walsh’s 20th-place finish led Eagle River’s boys, who placed seventh. South won the overall boys title.

Eagle River’s Nikki Boggs placed seventh to lead all local girls. Summer Frazier (15th) and Kate Paskievitch (23rd) finished in the top 25 to help the Wolves to a four-place team finish.

Sara Hartke (12th) and Hannah Booher (13th) led Chugiak’s girls, which placed seventh.

South’s Kaitlyn Bailly won the girls’ race in 19:51 while West claimed the team title.

Skinny Raven’s Urban Race will be held today (Thursday, Sept. 12) at the west end of the Park Strip in Anchorage at 4 p.m.

 

Smith wins all-around  

Chugiak’s Maddie Smith won the floor exercise and had a pair of second-place finishes (vault, balance beam) to win the all-around competition in a quad meet with South, Service and West on Saturday at Chugiak High.

South (184.25 points) won the team title ahead of Service (164.425), Chugiak (108.65) and West (89.6).

The Mustangs are hosting a meet against East and South on Friday, Sept. 13 at 4:30 p.m.

 

ER gymnastics head

I’m assuming Mackenzie Smith won the all-around and each event. Haven’t seen results yet.

Eagle River travels to Dimond on Friday, Sept. 13 for a meet with the Lynx and Service at 4:30 p.m.

 

South 27, ER 6

Mercedes Tomey scored the Wolves’ lone touchdown on a hook-and-ladder in a 27-6 flag football loss to visting South on Saturday. Eagle River hosts Service today (Thursday, Sept. 12) at 7 p.m. and plays East on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 4:30 p.m. at Anchorage Football Stadium.

 

Service 12, Chugiak 6

XXXX scored on a 100-yard interception return in Chugiak’s 12-6 flag football loss to Service on Saturday at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium. The Mustangs host South today (Thursday, Sept. 12) at 7:30 p.m. before playing Bartlett on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at AFS at 7:30 p.m.

The Wolves travel to Bartlett today (Thursday, Sept. 12) at 7:15 p.m. then host East on Wednesday, Sept. 18 the same time. 

 

West 3, Chugiak 1

West volleyball downed visiting Chugiak 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 14-25, 25-21) on Saturday. Natalie Stark led the Mustangs with five kills and four blocks.

 

ER fifth at Nikiski

Eagle River volleyball placed fifth out of six teams at Nikiski’s Shayna Pritchard Memorial Tournament on Saturday. Wasilla won the title.

Eagle River’s Kara Viotto was named to the all-tournament team.

 

South 8, ER 1

Ryan Casey (boys No. 1 singles) earned Eagle River’s lone win in an 8-1 loss to South tennis Sept. 5.

Chugiak was scheduled to play East on Wednesday, Sept. 11, but a score was not available when the Star went to press.

Tennis moves inside starting today (Thursday, Sept. 12) when Eagle River plays South at Alaska Club East at 3 p.m. The Wolves are also in action Tuesday, Sept. 17 against Service at Alaska Club North at 3 p.m.

Chugiak and East meet Friday, Sept. 13 at Alaska Club East at 3 p.m. The Mustangs play Dimond on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Alaska Club North at 3 p.m.

 

ER grad earns soccer honor

2010 Eagle River High graduate Emily Davis was named the NCAA Division III Northwest Conference’s defensive student athlete of the week Sept. 3.

Davis, a Whitman College keeper, posted a 1-0 shutout over Carroll University on Sept. 1 and preserved a 7-0 win over Northwest Christian University on Aug. 30, playing the second half.

Davis is a senior who is majoring in biology.
