AFD rescues kayaker from surging Eagle River

The Anchorage Fire Department on Sunday, Sept. 16 rescued a kayaker pinned against a partially submerged log in Eagle River.

The unidentified man had taken to the river despite strong winds and rain that raised water levels in the Anchorage bowl.

Anchorage Fire Department Capt. Rick Bayless told the Anchorage Daily News that the man was struggling to keep his head above the rushing water when rescuers arrived.

They used a chain saw to cut the submerged log into pieces.

Bayless said he was able to grab the man by his life jacket and maneuver him to shore.

The man was hypothermic and treated at an Anchorage hospital.

Earlier this summer, two canoeists from Montana died in the river when their canoe was submerged under a log jam.
