Chugiak’s flag football team raced to a 26-6 homecoming win over Eagle River on Saturday, Sept. 15 at Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium.

The Mustangs got three touchdowns from speedster Holly Brehmer, who scored twice in the second half on hook-and-ladder plays to break open what had been a 13-7 game at the half.

Mustangs coach Jon Schroeder said Brehmer has been learning to better harness her speed in recent games.

“She’s now learning how to read her blocks,” Schroeder said.

The three touchdowns against Eagle River made it seven scores in three games for Chugiak’s offensive leader.

“These last two games she’s been going crazy,” Schroeder said.

Chugiak improved to 5-5 with the victory, and Schroeder said he thinks the squad is beginning to round into form.

“They’re starting to get some confidence in some of the stuff we’re doing,” he said.

The loss dropped Eagle River to 4-5 and snapped the team’s four-game winning streak.

“Up until this game we were doing great,” said Wolves coach Matt Turner.

Wide receiver Skylar Metzel scored Eagle River’s lone touchdown on a 75-yard pass from Lauren Frost.

Chugiak faced West on Wednesday, Sept. 19, but a score was not available when the Star went to press.

Eagle River plays Dimond at 6:30 p.m. today at Eagle River. Both teams are in action at noon on Saturday, Sept. 22, with the Mustangs traveling to AFS to face Bartlett and the Wolves taking on East at Dimond. On Monday, Sept. 24, Eagle River visits Service at 6:30 p.m. and Chugiak visits South (at AFS) at 8 p.m.
