Step out for diabetes

Published:

Each year, Lions throughout our state are dedicated to finding a cure for Diabetes. Each year, we participate in the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes fundraiser to do our part to stop this disease. Participants are changing the future and making a positive impact in the lives of those who are affected by diabetes.  This year’s campaign is set for Sunday, Oct. 13 at 1:30 p.m. at Sullivan Area in Anchorage.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with diabetes, it is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.

The cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors appear to play roles.

September is the month to register and join a team. To register, visit http://stepout.diabetes.org/site/PageServer?pagename=OUT_homepage.

This month, Walgreens will be matching each donation received at the time of registration for a maximum total donation of up to $50,000. That's right! By registering today — and making a personal donation — you’ll be making twice the impact due to the generosity of Walgreens’ matching gift.

Step Out participants are committed to walk and raise money in this inspirational event not because 26 million people in the United States have diabetes, but because they walk among us in our lives and at the event.

Once you register, you'll be given your very own web page and will have access to lots of tools to help you fundraise your Step Out center. You'll be able to customize the page with your reason for walking, send emails to ask others to join you or donate and even download Facebook and smartphone apps. And of course, your Step Out specialists — American Diabetes Association staff — will be here to help all along the way.

So, come join us at Sullivan Arena for the Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes. Bring your family and friends and enjoy the health festival, kid’s zone and Humpy’s lunch lounge. Doors open at noon with the walk beginning at 1:30 p.m.
