There’s no better way to rebound from a blowout than to defeat your rival the following game.

Both Chugiak and Eagle River High will have that chance Saturday, Sept. 21 when the Wolves host the Mustangs for their homecoming at 2 p.m.

Eagle River, which is coming off a 52-14 loss to Service on Sept. 12, needs to play a smart game, Wolves’ head coach Jason Brewer said.

“We just have to control the ball,” he said. “Cut down on mistakes.”

After getting blanked 56-0 on Sept. 12, taking care of the fundamentals — like execution and focus — will be key for Chugiak, head coach Duncan Shackelford said.

“We have to go out and play the game,” he said. “It may be cliché, but it’s something we didn’t accomplish last week.”

Brewer is anticipating a hardnosed contest.

“It should be a very physical game,” he said.

Chugiak owns a 6-1 record in their seven meetings, with Eagle River’s lone win coming via forfeit two years ago.

In addition to earning bragging rights for the next year, Saturday’s showdown could have a big impact on each team’s playoff hopes.

Eagle River (1-4 overall, 1-3 CIC) sits in sixth place with one Cook Inlet Conference win and Chugiak (2-3 overall, 2-2 CIC) is in fifth. West, Dimond and Service are tied for second with three conference wins apiece and defending large-schools state champion South is atop the CIC with four.

The top five CIC teams make the postseason.

Chugiak and Eagle River each finish the regular season with games against East and Bartlett — both winless so far this year.

The importance of Saturday’s outcome is not lost on Eagle River.

“We’re both right there in the playoff hunt,” Brewer said. “This is definitely a swing game for us.”

Chugiak, too, has a playoff mindset.

“We need to win the next three games,” Shackelford said.

Shackelford said he has the utmost respect for Brewer.

“I consider him a friend,” he said.

But come kickoff, that relationship changes, Shackelford said.

“We ain’t good friends this weekend.”
