Helping churches help people
I love our community! We have lived here since 1989, raising our three kids (Hillary, Ryan, and Abi) in Eagle River. They graduated from Chugiak High School. I teach Kindergarten at Homestead Elementary, and my husband John teaches band at Gruening Middle School. Our family is very invested in our amazing community.
It is my honor and privilege to have this opportunity to introduce Love INC of Eagle River to you with this Alaska Star article. I have so much to share that we are breaking it into two articles. This article will bethe first of a two-part series.
A Love INC board goal is to get our Love INC logo and mission out in the community. Our mission is “mobilize local churches to transform lives and communities in the name of Christ.” I hope that many of you saw Love INC with this mission banner recently in the Chugiak Fourth of July Parade and the Eagle River Bear Paw Parade. We were wearing our purple T-shirts with the Love INC logo, a white heart with a red cross. Larry Gall, of HiRes Graphics, made our beautiful new shirts.
Love INC is “home missions” at heart. There are many people right in our neighborhoods and our communities who need a helping hand and a caring heart. We have seventeen Love INC partner churches that work in unity with each other and with Love INC, reaching out to our neighbors in need with God’s love. Our wonderful partner churches are: Alliance Christian Fellowship, Community Covenant Church, Eagle River Church of God, Eagle River Grace Church, Eagle River Nazarene Church, Eagle River Missionary Baptist Church, Grace Community AME Mission, Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, Joy Lutheran Church, King’s Way Ministry Center, Peter’s Creek Christian Center, River of Life Lutheran Church, Riverside Community Church, Skyline Family Fellowship, St. Andrew Catholic Church, St. John’s Orthodox Church, and United Methodist Church of Chugiak.
Love INC partner churches are asked to designate a Prayer Contact Person and one or two Church Ministry Coordinators (CMCs), or liaisons, with Love INC. They get the word out to their congregations about Love INC needs and events. On Love INC Sunday, board members visit a partner church, share briefly about the ministry, and distribute our talent survey (volunteer checklist).
Love INC is a non-profit corporation, with national headquarters in Minneapolis. We operate on a conservative budget, funded by our partner churches and individual donors. Love INC has a call center, where we receive phone requests for help. I love volunteering at the call center when I am off school in the summer. It is the heart of the ministry. We have a detailed computerized intake process over the phone.
Faith is restored to the downhearted through the help of compassionate, caring volunteers, who listen and pray with each caller. We then verify that the needs are legitimate. We mobilize resources, and call back with several options of assistance. We have seen miraculous answers to prayer! We may recommend a government or local agency, Christian volunteers, a church program or class, or a combination of any of these. We have touched many families in this community, with the love of God and support from Love INC and partner churches.
Next week, I will share more with you about the development of our Love INC of Eagle River Ministry. For now, I will close with our contact information. Please stop by, call or email us. We would love to hear from you!
