Man slain by mail bomb
A package bomb exploded at a home in Eklutna Heights, killing David Kerr and critically injuring his wife, Michelle.
Kerr was the father of George Kerr, a primary witness in the murder trials of Douglas Gustafson and Raymond D. Cheely Jr. for the slaying of Jeffrey Cain on the Glenn Highway.
A 5-year-old neighbor boy witnessed the explosion.
Teens credited with catching accused rapist
Two area teens were being credited by police with helping catch 42-year-old John Peterson, who was accused of raping a 13-year-old girl.
The two teens, Shawn Stone and Aaron Smith, were riding their bicycles in the area of the Eagle River post office when they heard cries for help.
The teens approached the area and saw Peterson and the girl on the ground. When Peterson tried to leave, Stone detained him.
In the meantime, Smith was able to flag down a passing police officer, who responded to the scene and arrested Peterson.
