Chugiak’s volleyball team has opened the season on a roll. Now the Mustangs will find out how they stack up against the nation’s best in Sin City.

The Mustangs left in the early-morning hours of Sept. 14 for Las Vegas, where they’ll be participating in the 48-team Durango Fall Classic Sept. 16-17. Chugiak coach Kelly Kavanaugh said the tournament brings together some of the top volleyball teams in the country.

“It’s one of the premier early season high school tournaments in the country,” Kavanaugh said via e-mail on Sept. 12.

The Mustangs have dominated the Cook Inlet Conference thus far, pushing their conference record to 6-0 with a three-game win over East on Sept. 13 — just a few hours before getting on the red-eye to Vegas.

“It’s going to be a long night,” Kavanaugh said.

Kathleen Gill had 15 assists and 10 digs for Chugiak against the T-Birds. Kavanaugh said the team also got strong performances from Anna Matthews (5 kills, 2 aces, 12 digs, 2 blocks), Hanna Shuman (3 blocks) and Kirsten Veech (4 kills).

Chugiak 3, Bartlett 0

Chugiak started slow but finished strong in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-11) win over Bartlett on Sept. 9 at Bartlett.

McKenzie Kish led the team with 10 assists for Chugiak, which improved to 5-0 in the CIC. Kathleen Gill added seven assists for Chugiak, which got six kills each from Anna Matthews, Karlee Kavanaugh and Allison Baumgartner.
