Chugiak football to forfeit three wins
Chugiak football coach Duncan Shackelford said Thursday that the Mustangs varsity team must forfeit all three wins from earlier this season due to the use of an ineligible player.
Shackelford said he told the team about the situation after Wednesday’s practice.
“Toughest 10 minutes of my life,” Shackelford said.
Up until Wednesday, Chugiak was 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the Cook Inlet Conference. The Mustangs are now officially 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the CIC and are no longer in contention for a playoff berth.
Shackelford said the meeting with his players was emotional.
“They took it really tough,” Shackelford said.
The head coach said the player in question is home-schooled, but that the coaching staff believed he was eligible to play in the Anchorage School District. Not so.
“It was an administrative mistake,” Shackelford said.
Chugiak will still its remaining two games, including Friday’s 7 p.m. game against West at Anchorage Football Stadium.
