DOG MAKES AVIATION HISTORY
Durand II, a six-week-old German Shepherd puppy last week made aviation history by being the first dog to fly over the North Pole.
Durand was purchased in Germany by Mrs. Richard Burg of Burg’s Birchwood Kennels in Chugiak and was shipped over SAS Airlines, which flies the North Pole route.
This canine pioneer was named for Durand I, favorite of the Birchwood Kennels who passed away last year.
EIGHTH GRADE TO GRADUATE
For the first time in the history of the Chugiak Elementary School *, formal graduation exercises will be held for the eighth grade graduates.
The exercises will take place on Wednesday, May 18th at 8 p.m. in the school’s multipurpose room.
The students of the 7th grade will decorate the room for the ceremony and Mr. Cliff Hartman, principal of (Orah Dee) Clark Jr. High School will be the guest speaker.
Graduation dinners for the students are being sponsored by their parents.
* At the time grades one through eight attended school at the old Chugiak Elementary School. Grades nine through twelve were bussed in to Anchorage High School. The school year ended earlier as holiday breaks were shorter (one week at Christmas, two days for Thanksgiving and no spring break).
