"Wild bear encounter"

Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 20:00

One day when I was 2 or 3 years old, my mom and I went up to Alaska to see our friend Ms. Mary. I was making a orange picture frame. The two dogs were outside playing. While my mom and Ms. Mary were talking. I looked outside and there I saw it…a wild BEAR! I called “mom!” She looked outside then she said “wow let me get a picture of that.” Of curse I was really scared. I started crying really hard. My mom and Ms. Mary raced up stairs to get their cameras. I was 2 or 3 so I didn’t know where the stairs were. Plus the two dogs were outside with the bear. The bear was big and black. I thought that the bear could break through the back door. I started to cry harder! There was so much chaos at that moment.

When mom and Ms. Mary finally came down the stairs with their cameras, my mom tried to calm me down and said “It’ll be ok, it’ll be ok.”

They took a picture just in time before it went back into the woods. The dogs weren’t harmed in any why. Which was a very good thing. After that shocking moment I finally calmed down. And the rest of the day was a wonderful day. I’ll never ever forget that day with its story.

McKinley Kerans, 9, of Medina, Ohio, has strong ties to Eagle River where her family lived when she was born. This is her memory of a bear encounter on a previous visit. She wonders what adventures lie ahead when she will be here again next summer.
