Businessperson's race, planned this weekend
The always-popular Businessperson’s Race will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Chugiak Dog Mushers Association’s Beach Lake trails off of South Birchwood Loop.
“It’s a tradition,” said CDMA president Val Jokela.
Jokela said the races have been going on for “easily 25” years.
The format is simple. Local businesspeople sign up and are teamed with local mushers, who donate their time and dogs to show the rookies the basics of running a dog team. The race itself is a 2-mile, 3-dog affair.
The races are held in conjunction with the CDMA’s annual Eagle River Classic races, which will be held both Saturday and Sunday. The Classic races begin at 2 p.m. each day.
Jokela said the races are fan-friendly, with many of the local businesspeople dressing up in wacky costumes for the event.
“It’s just a lot of fun,” she said.
Making things even better this year, she said, are the condition of the trails.
“They’re gorgeous,” she said, noting that head groomer Paul Dombrowski has done “a fabulous job” keeping the mushing-only trails in top shape.
