Speedy skiers show their stuff
Seven local skiers earned spots on Alaska’s Junior Olympic Nordic ski team, while two others claimed spots on Alaska’s Arctic Winter Games teams following the final Besh Cup races of the year Feb. 4-5 in Fairbanks.
Making the Junior Olympic team on the women’s side were Sarissa Lammers, Kinsey Loan and Krysti McPhetres. Named to the men’s team were Isaac Lammers, Kenny Brewer, Alex Loan and David McPhetres.
Skiing their way onto the Team Alaska squad that will compete in the Arctic Winter Games in March were Roan Hall and Hannah Stevens.
The teams were named based on season Besh Cup points standings.
A sophomore at Chugiak High, Sarissa Lammers earned her spot on the JO team by finishing second in the Besh Cup standings among J2 girls. Kinsey Loan, a 2011 Chugiak grad who skis for APU, finished fifth in the Cup standings among OJ/J1 girls, one spot of her CHS classmate and UAF skier Krysti McPhetres.
For the men, Isaac Lammers finished fourth among J1/OJ skiers, Kenny Brewer was ninth, Alex Loan was 11th and David McPhetres was 14th. Brewer is a 2011 Chugiak grad, Lammers is a senior at CHS, Loan is a junior and McPhetres is a sophomore.
Hall, an eighth grader at Mirror Lake, qualified for the AWG team by finishing fourth among J3 boys. He was fifth in the Besh Cup No. 5 classic race and sixth in the 5K freestyle in Fairbanks.
Stephens, a junior at Eagle River High, earned her spot by finishing 10th among J1 skiers in the overall standings.
The 2012 Junior Olympics will be held Feb. 29 through March 11 in Soldier Hollow, Utah. The 2012 Arctic Winter Games begin March 4 in Whitehorse.
Hall wins Mirror Lake classic
Mirror Lake’s Roan Hall was the fastest skier at a 2.9-kilometer middle school classic race held at Mirror Lake on Feb. 1.
Hall won the eighth grade boys race by eight seconds and also bested sixth/seventh grade boys winner Hunter Wonders (Goldenview) by two seconds for the top overall time.
Three Mirror Lake eighth grade girls cracked the top-10. Ashley Veech was eighth, Kortney Craig was ninth and Catherine Goolsby was 10th.
Other top-10 showings were turned in by Mirror Lake’s Carly Dennis, who finished eighth in the sixth/seventh grade girls race and the Coyotes’ Gage Mercer, who was 10th among eighth grade boys.
