Chugiak girls net back-to-back wins
Chugiak’s girls got back on the winning track with a pair of Cook Inlet Conference wins last week.
On Thursday, Feb. 16, the Mustangs downed crosstown rival Eagle River 50-11 and notched a 34-26 win over South two days later to improve to 7-5 in the CIC.
Madison McAleavey paced Chugiak with eight points against South. Jessica Tramp chipped in seven and Alistie Aguilar added five.
“It feels good to get good conference wins,” Aguilar said. “Hopefully, we’ll get more.”
Chugiak’s wake-up call came in the form of losses to West and Service, Aguilar said. After having beaten both teams earlier this season, the Mustangs fell 37-35 to West on Feb. 7 and a 36-34 to Service on Feb. 11.
Aguilar said Chugiak took both opponents too lightly, and it cost them much-needed CIC wins. Since then, the Mustangs’ attitude has changed, she said.
“After that, our practices got really intense,” Aguilar said.
Aguilar said the team’s goal is to win its final two games of the season (the Mustangs hosted East on Wednesday, Feb. 22 and play at Bartlett on Friday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.) before heading into the CIC tournament.
The Star went to press before a score was available from Wednesday’s game. Check www.alaskastar.com for updates.
For success, Chugiak needs to stay composed on offense and play with intelligence and intensity on defense, Aguilar said.
Chugiak 50, Eagle River 11
Ten different players scored points for Chugiak as the Mustangs rolled to a lopsided 50-11 win over CIC rival Eagle River.
Tramp led all scorers with 13 points. McAleavey chipped in eight points and Aguilar added seven.
Sam Coy paced the Wolves with six points followed by Lauren Frost with four.
The win gave Chugiak a sweep in the season series. The Mustangs earned a 64-25 win over Eagle River on Jan. 18.
West 79, Eagle River 44
West High cruised past Eagle River 79-44 on Feb. 18 to keep the Wolves winless in conference play.
Frost pumped in 20 points to lead Eagle River. Coy also reached double digits with 11 points.
The Wolves hosted Bartlett on Wednesday, Feb. 22, but the Star went to press before a score was available from that game. Check www.alaskastar.com for updates.
Eagle River concludes its regular season at Dimond on Friday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m.
