Local skiers shine at highest levels
Local Nordic skiers Sarissa Lammers and Kinsey Loan each made the podium on the final day of the 2012 U.S. Ski Association Junior Nationals in Soldier Hollow, Utah.
Lammers, who skis for Alaska Nordic Racing, joined APU’s Taryn Hunt-Smith and Lydia Blanchett to claim second place in the J2 women’s 3-by-3 kilometer freestyle relay on March 11. Loan, who skis for Alaska Pacific University, teamed up with ANR’s Kimberly DelFrate of Palmer and Anchorage’s Annie Liotta (Alaska Winter Stars) to win the bronze in the women’s older junior relay race.
The relays capped a series of four races in seven days for each of the seven local skiers who traveled to the junior nationals, the top competition for Nordic skiers in the country.
Sarissa Lammers also had the top individual showings among local skiers during individual racing. On March 5 she placed 12th in the J2 women’s classic sprint, on March 7 she was sixth in the J2 women’s mass freestyle and on March 9 she was 13th in the J2 women’s classic race.
Kinsey Loan earned three top-20 finishes, placing 18th in the OJ women’s sprint, 19th in the freestyle and 17th in the classic. ANR’s Kryston McPhetres cracked the top-20 in the older junior women’s sprint, placing 15th.
Also competing at the meet were local ANR skiers Isaac Lammers, David McPhetres, Alex Loan and Kenny Brewer.
