Wade Charles wins 600

The overall winner of the Midnight Sun 600 snowmobile race between Anchorage and Fairbanks is Wade Charles of Eagle River, who raced his 776 Blizzard Model Ski-Doo in a record 10 hours, 11 minutes and 10 seconds.

On the first day of the race, Charles finished 2nd in the D class and third overall in 3 hours and 31 minutes. His time on the second day was 3 hours, 6 minutes and 12 seconds, which was first place overall and in his class.

On the third day, he lost around 15 minutes changing a belt and attempting to repair a damaged ski, but managed to finish first in his class and second overall.

Charles was a member of a 10-man team, all driving Blizzard model Ski-Doos. They were sponsored by the Red Barn, B&B Tools, The Ponderosa, Meat Service, Concrete Products, Anchorage Sand and Gravel and LaBow Haynes. Of the 10-man team, six finished the race.

Three other members of the team were from the Eagle River area. Louis Finch, who finished fifth in the B class, Hal Conquist and Pat Mahoney.

Charles said that the first prize money of $2,200 will go into the team treasury to be used for entry fees and expenses for other races they plan to enter. They area all planning on racing in the Hatcher Pass race this coming weekend, and the Talkeetna race later this month.

Charles had competed in the Midnight Sun 600 last year, but was forced to drop out becaue of mechanical problems eighty miles short of the finish line.
