Scouting for Food 2012 a big success

Wednesday, April 18, 2012 - 21:46

The Chugiak-Eagle River Food Pantry would like to thank our area scouts and our local community. “Scouting for Food,” during which Scouts collect food for local food banks and food pantries, started nationwide in 1986. Today, scouts are committed to providing millions of hours of service.

Here in Chugiak-Eagle River, scouts collected 2,688 pounds of food and $1,170 last weekend. Scout leaders organized the collection, provided transportation and watched out for the safety of the scouts. We would especially like to thank Cub Scout Pack 229, Girl Scout Group 642 and Boy Scout Troop 229 under John Woyte and Bill Bergeron.

We are thankful as well to the many generous local residents who donated food. Many people left canned food on their door steps for pick-up. Fred Meyer and Carrs/Safeway provided safe collection and drop points for the canned food.

Thanks to the scouts, their leaders and the community donors, the Chugiak-Eagle River Food Pantry will be able to continue our mission of providing temporary, emergency food assistance to hundreds of needy individuals and families in our area.
