Locals swimming in medals after AK Junior Olympics
Izzy Powers, 10, won six events and racked up 137 points en route to a girls 10 and under individual title at the Alaska Swimming Junior Olympic Championships at Bartlett High on April 26-29. Powers helped the Chugiak Aquatics Club to a ninth-place finish with a combined junior team score of 401.5 points. The Knik Swim Club was sixth with 789.5 points.
In the senior standings, Knik was fifth with a combined score of 713 points and CAC was 10th with 154 points.
Knik finished the meet with an overall combined team score of 1,502.5 points in fifth place. CAC was ninth with 555.5 points.
Girls 10 and under
Powers won the 10U girls’ 100-yard backstroke, 100 IM, 200 IM, 50 backstroke, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. She also placed second in the 200 freestyle.
Knik Swim Club’s Gracie Keen finished second behind Powers in the 100 backstroke. Keen also placed second in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly and finished third in the 200 IM.
In the girls’ 11-12 division, Knik’s Cheyenne Burke won the 100 backstroke. She also placed second in the 500 free and third in the 200 IM.
Burke was also part of the second-place 400 free relay team along with Katherine Jarupakorn, Pearl Jarupakor and Anna Schlimgen.
Pearl Jarupakorn won the 50 breaststroke, finished second in the 100 breaststroke and third the 200 breaststroke.
Leslie Cockreham, of CAC, took second in the 400 IM.
In the girls’ 13-14 division, Knik’s Emmie Jennings won three events (200 IM, 100 free and 200 free) and finished second in the individual standings with 127 points. Jennings placed second in the 1,650 free, 50 free and 100 breaststroke. She also took third in the 200 backstroke.
Girls 15 and over
In the girls’ 15 and older division, Knik’s Jordyn Caldwell won the 400 IM and 1,000 free. Caldwell placed second in the 100 free and 200 free ahead of teammate Sammy Burke, who finished third in both events.
Sammy Burke, who won the individual title with 120 points, placed first the 100 backstroke and 500 free. She also finished second in the 200 backstroke and third in the 200 IM.
Sammy Burke and Caldwell were also part of the second-place 400 free relay team along with Kaylynn Donnolly and Jennifer Jarupakorn.
Knik’s Kate Mondl won the 1,650 free by nearly a full minute.
In the boys’ 13-14 division, Knik’s Bryce Fox-Icarro took second in the 1,650 free and third in the 1,000 free.
Boys 15 and older
In the boys’ 15 and older division, Knik’s Blaise Fox-Icarro placed second in the 400 IM.
