2012 Chugiak baseball team a self-assured group
Chugiak High’s baseball team isn’t the same as last year.
That was apparent to head coach Bill Lierman just two games into the 2012 season.
The Mustangs saw a five-run lead disappear in the sixth inning against Dimond and trailed by two in the fourth against West, but Chugiak stayed calm and won both games to start the season. Last year, Lierman said his team imploded in similar situations.
Chugiak, which is made up of a majority of returners, is a more resilient squad this season, Lierman said after the Mustangs defeated West 7-4 on May 3 at Mulcahy Stadium.
“Collectively, we have more self confidence,” he said.
Trailing West 4-2, Brad Cooper smacked a two-run double then scored the game-winning run on a passed ball in the fourth inning for Chugiak. Two days later, Service blanked the Mustangs 3-0.
Chugiak improved to 3-2 with a 16-6 win over Bartlett on Tuesday, May 8 at Mulcahy Stadium.
Chugiak takes on crosstown rival Eagle River on Saturday, May 12 at 7 p.m. at Mulcahy Stadium and battles East on Monday, May 14 at Kosinski No. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
Chugiak’s entire lineup is made up of quality ball players, Lierman said.
“We have 15 solid individuals,” he said. “They’re just good kids.”
Chugiak’s determination has paid dividends early in the season, Lierman said.
“They work hard every day, and it’s been showing,” he said.
