Familiar faces rule ER Tri
Shannon Donley is back on top of the Eagle River Triathlon.
Donley, whose string of nine consecutive race wins was broken last year by Amber Stull, beat Stull to the finish line by 57 seconds at Chugiak High by about a minute to win the women’s division in the Sunday, June 3 race.
Donley finished in 1 hour, 5 minutes, 29 seconds. She was 22 seconds faster than Stull during the 500 yard swim in the Chugiak pool, then increased her advantage to nearly two minutes by the end of the 20-kilometer bike ride before holding off Stull in the 5K run. Donley has now won 10 of the 14 times the event has been held. Jeni Winegarner (1998), Lisa Keller (‘99), Lori Staats-Cahill (’00) and Stull are the only other women to stand atop the podium.
Larrell Lockard was third.
In the men’s division, Jens Beck opened with the fastest swim split of the day and never looked back, holding off challengers Will Ross and Daniel Folmar by about a minute to earn his seventh career title.
Beck crossed the finish line in 57:55, 50 seconds in front of Ross, the defending champion. Folmar was 11 seconds back of Ross in third.
