Four Chinooks among ABL's best
As of July 1, four Chinooks were among the top Alaska Baseball League players through 15 games. Through June, Univesity of North Dakota slugger Kris Kwak was leading the league with four home runs in 53 at bats.
Chinooks’ catcher Adam Humes’ 15 RBIs were second to Nate Ring (17) of the Peninsula Oilers.
On the mound, Mike Jeffreys had the second-most strikeouts with 18. Matt Marsh was tied for fourth with 16.
The Chinooks started a four-game road trip at the first-place Oilers in Kenai on Wednesday, July 4, but a score was not available when the Star went to press. The series continues today (Thursday, July 5), Friday and Saturday at Coral Seymour Memorial Park. All games start at 7 p.m.
Chugiak-Eagle River then travels to the Valley for a game against the Miners on Monday, July 9 at 6 p.m. before returning to Chugiak for a five-game home stand.
The string of home games starts with a two-game series against the Oilers on Tuesday, July 10 and Wednesday, July 11 both at 6 p.m.
Bucs 9, Chinooks 1
The Chinooks managed just three hits as the Anchorage Bucs cruised to a 9-1 win Sunday, July 1 at Mulcahy Stadium.
Humes hit his second straight home run for the Chinooks’ lone run of the game.
Chinooks 6, Oilers 5
Humes thrilled the crowd when he hit a two-run, walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Chinooks past the Oilers 6-5 on Saturday, June 30 at Loretta French Park.
Humes went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and scored a run. Eight different Chinooks had hits.
Miners sweep Fish
After defeating Mat-Su 5-2 on Thursday, June 28, the Chinooks dropped a doubleheader to the Miners at home the following day.
The Miners won the first game 5-0 and edged the Chinooks 5-4 in the second game. Both were seven innings.
Scott Kalamar went 2-for-3 to lead the Chinooks in Game 1.
Chugiak-Eagle River, which managed just five hits in the first game, doubled that in Game 2. Three Chinooks (Kris Kwak, Drew Shields and Stockton Taylor) had multi-hit games.
