Anchorage runners sweep Bear Paw 5K
A pair of Anchorage runners were separated by less than a second at the 2012 Bear Paw 5K on Saturday, July 14 in downtown Eagle River.
Robert Walgren won the sprint to the finish line over Anthony Tomisch. Both men finished in 15 minutes, 11 seconds.
Defending champion Jake Moe, of Anchorage, took third in 15:17.
Tyler Knox’s sixth-place finish was the best among local runners. Recent Chugiak High graduate Isaac Lammers took seventh.
Other top local men’s finishers included Joe Alward (9th), Levi Younger (10th), Tim Sorensen (11th) and Greg Schroll (13th).
Anchorage’s Halidie Wilt defended her 2011 women’s title with a time of 17:59. Incoming Eagle River High junior Kate Mondl was second in 18:16.
Other top local women’s finishers included Sheryl Loan (6th), Hannah Stevens (8th) and Mary O’Reilly (10th).
In her first 5K of the year, Mondl said she wasn’t focused on winning.
“I just try to beat my own times,” she said.
The lack of inclines made for a speedy race, Mondl said.
“It’s a pretty flat, fast course,” she said.
“It was good for PRs,” he said.
With her final year of cross country running on the horizon, ERHS senior-to-be Stevens said it was nice to start the year with an easy race.
“It’s a nice short race,” she said. “No hills.”
The cool, cloudy weather made for ideal racing conditions, Lammers said.
“It was the perfect temperature,” he said. “It wasn’t too hot, it wasn’t too cold.”
Mondl said she was happy the rain held off.
“I’m so glad it wasn’t raining,” she said. “It’s not too sunny, but it’s not down pouring.”
The annual event offers runners a chance to reconnect with all their friends, Stevens said.
“There’s a bunch of people you see again,” she said.
And most are locals.
“I think half of Eagle River is here,” Mondl said.
Lammers said the race gave him an opportunity to scope out the local prep talent that will replace him once he leaves for the University of Alaska Fairbanks in a month. Lammers will run cross country and ski for UAF’s Nordic ski team.
“Today was fun,” Lammers said. “It’s really cool to see everybody come out and race.”
